About Johannesburg
Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa, and is one of the most diverse cities in the world: racially and economically. South Africa has a yawning gap between rich and poor, and a history of racial oppression and disharmony. The needs are massive: 20% of South Africa 's population has HIV, and the unemployment rate in Johannesburg is 40%. 2.4 million children in South Africa are AIDS orphans.
Melville Union Church
David and Leisl West founded Melville Union Church (MUC) as a deliberately multiracial Christian community in the heart of Johannesburg. There the church preaches the Lordship of Christ: working with South Africa's future leaders in the universities nearby as well as providing for street children and AIDS orphans. It is a challenging but incredibly strategic ministry. Teams from SWAC visited to support MUC in the past.
